Self-Government for Aboriginal People in Urban Areas

Bibliographic Information:
Peters, Evelyn J. "Self-Government for Aboriginal People in Urban Areas: a Literature Review and Suggestions for Research." Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (1992).

In this literature review essay done by Evelyn J. Peters she covers a perspective influencing the call for aboriginal people to have a form of self-government. She states that aboriginal people are a people who inhabitated the land before it was inhabitated by the cultural that dictates its today and that to be considered aboriginal they have to still acquire their old and original customs or languages or etc, hence making it somewhat necessary that the people have their own self-government.

The article is organized in a formal outline that is far extended and goes into great depth. She lists her paper in the following format:
A.
1.
a.
b.
2.

.....and so on

What is the purpose of this article?
The purpose of this article is to show examples and clauses that help show the need by some for a self-government concerning aboriginal people. It is an informative essay showing people the side for aboriginal people in their defense.

What violations of 'Critical thinking', if any, exists in this article?
I would have to say that if there were any violations of critical thinking in this article it would probably be considering other interpretations. I feel that the paper was pretty one-sided when concerning the issue of aboriginal people wanting to establish a self-government.

Recently I have learned new things about Google that were very useful in my research. The most general thing that I have learned which has been very useful is the advanced search. In this search it allows one to access a more in-depth search engine in which you can search several things at one using either "and" or "or" which allows you to either combine the search of words or just the opposite and make your search very broad. Another thing that I learned that I feel will be very useful in my search now and researches I will be doing in the future.

"The Nation of Cowards"

One of my favorite news sources is newsmax.com which is a conservative website that discusses politics. On this website there was an article about what Attorney General Eric Holder said when he referenced America as a "Nation of Cowards". They seemed to 'bash' him for his remarks of how even though white people and black people are segregated at work in the society, they are integrated as far as where they live. In my opinion, I think that they let neglected several writing guidelines such as avoiding emotional reasoning, considering other interpretations, and truly defining the problem that there is with Holder's comments. I believe that there are two interpretations that can be derived from Holder's comments. One being that some of what Holder says is true, it is statistically accurate that whites and blacks don't necessarily choose to live together. On the other hand what was the point of Holder saying this? It's not really the government's duty to segregate who we live by and who we choose to socialize with outside of work. The other point could be who's fault is this? Is it that whites don't want to live in black neighborhoods? Is it that blacks don't want to live in white neighborhoods? In this scenario I don't believe that its either of those, I believe that we choose to live and interact with people taht have ideas and hobbies of our own. I wouldn't choose to be best friends with someone who enjoys bird watching, because I don't enjoy bird watching. Typically, regardless of the color of one's skin or their race, I believe that people tend to choose to socialize with people that they can relate to and that have the same interests as them.

Research Challenge

For me right now the biggest challenge I am having is finding time to meet with the campus organization I have choosen, cause I'm working and then school work. Then, I am also having the challenge of knowing how we're supposed to link our topics with the organization.

Campus Organization/ Semester Research Project Report

In doing research there are always complications in fulfilling the process, where to begin, what information is the most useful, how to relate it to others, how to remain within the guidelines. At this point in my reseach process I am just a little confused at what I need to do to begin, and how I am supposed to relate my topic (interracial marriage) into the campus organization I have selected. On the other hand I have found many useful resources from the library that will be useful and easily applicable to my research topic.

Navigating the MC Library

On Friday, February 6, 2008, I went to the Miller Center Library to look for some books that were on the topic of Interracial Marriages. I went onto the computers that were available at the MC Library and went onto the MC Library OPAC website and used the basic tab and narrowed my search for books on my research topic. By doing so I found that there were about seventy items located in the library that were related to my topic. I wrote down some of the call numbers, then went to the section that they were located and found one of the books, White Logic White Methods, and then went to the circulation desk and checked the book out.

San Antonio Spurs Aging?

Championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007. Some people consider 3 NBA Championships in 5 years a dynasty. But when it comes to the Spurs they often get overlooked. They aren't a flashy team with big highlight reels, its just not their type of game. They are a defensive minded team with a large cast of role players who care more about fulfilling their role on the team then receiving recognition for their stats or big dunks. They don't win games flashyly, but they do win games consistentlly. Since 1970, in ALL sports, the San Antonio Spurs have had the highest winning percentage. Their winning percentage is higher than the New York Yankees, the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Lakers, the New England Patriots. And yet this team has yet to receive any recognition as a dynasty. Since 1991, they have not had a losing season, and have now made the playoffs 17 years straight, which is best of any professional sports team.

The concern now though isn't the recognition of their successes, but rather can they continue their successes. When the Spurs won so many games in the '70's and '80's it was largely due to their Hall of Fame forward George "the Iceman" Gervin. In the late '80's and through the '90's it was largely because of their future Hall of Famer David "the Admiral" Robinson. In the late '90's through today they have been so victorious because of the base of their team, Tim Duncan, who is also a future Hall of Famer. But the clock is ticking on Tim Duncan's playing career and no one knows quite how much fuel is left in his tank along with the Spurs tank. This year has been the Spurs worst first half of a season since the '88 season. The critics are starting to question this teams dynasty and their ability to keep being seen as the leagues winningest team. It is also causing devout fans to question this too. Have the Spurs aged too much to be a NBA Championship contender or have they just hit a rough patch?
